Legislators appeal the lower court ruling in redistricting.
The Supreme Court agreed to hear arguments for a case surrounding the redistricting of a South Carolina congressional map in 2020.
In 2018, the 1st Congressional District of South Carolina flipped its political majority. In 2020, the district flipped back when Nancy Mace was elected to the House of Representatives. After the election, South Carolina legislators used 2020 Census data to redraw this district, moving some minority neighborhoods from the 1st District into the 6th.
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) sued the President of the South Carolina Senate for the action, saying that the district redraw discriminated against the voting rights of Black Americans. In January 2023, a three-judge panel at the South Carolina District Court agreed.
The case has been appealed based on the authority given to legislatures to draw congressional districts.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For the justices of the Supreme Court as they hear the case regarding congressional redistricting.
- For the officials in South Carolina as they pursue the defense of their district determinations.
